Expanded polystyrene, acrylic colors and canvas
All the pieces have been made with sheets of expanded polystyrene, cut with a warm wire, painted with acrylics, and glued on canvas.
The expanded polystyrene is a material usually used for building insulation but it is also quite versatile and can be used as a canvas.
It goes without saying that the surface features and the chemical composition of the expanded polystyrene influence the choice of the paintings to replicate.
Only water colors can be used and it’s impossible to create any fade.
This is the reason why all my works revisit mainly modern or contemporary artworks.
The lack of perspective and chiaroscuro, the absence of the three-dimensionality and the distinct shapes, the clean and often marked outlines of the space portions that make up the painting surface are the ideal starting point to make a super note in polystyrene.
This specific kind of material, so versatile but at the same time not very much ductile, allows me to revisit Kandinsky paintings, Mondrian masterpieces in a completely different way.
